What Is A Septic Tank?
Did you know that if you are not connected to mains drainage then you need a septic tank and soakaway?
What is a septic tank and soakaway?
All houses produce wastewater. Wastewater comprises of bath water, toilet water, sink water, shower water, washing machine and dishwasher water e.t.c
In many towns and cities, houses discharge their wastewater into the mains sewer. A large sewer pipe that is buried under the road, and from there eventually makes its way into a sewage treatment processing plant.
A house that is not connected to the mains drainage must have a septic tank and soakaway.
A septic tank is a large underground tank that has an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe connect to it.
Septic tanks come in many shapes and sizes. The size of the septic tank is based on the number of occupants in the house or it is based on the number of bedrooms in the property.
The soakaway is also known as a drainfield or leech field. It can be a pit or be constructed from a series of pipes.
Soakaways can also come in many shapes and sizes. Like the septic tank, the size of the soakaway is based on the number of occupants in the house or it is based on the number of bedrooms in the property.
How does a septic tank and soakaway work?
Wastewater from the house enters a large underground tank. The septic tank fills up with wastewater. After the wastewater reaches the outlet pipe, any excess water enters the soakaway. As it travels along the soakaway pipes it then soaks away into the soil.
As the wastewater percolates through the soil the bacteria and microbes in the soil clean it, treating it as it slowly makes its way through the land and eventually ends up in the sea.
If you have bought a house with a septic tank and you need to replace it, or you are building a house and you need to install a septic tank then don’t let it worry you. Septic tanks and soakaways are a lot easier to install than they use to be.
