how a septic tank works

Soakaway Design

What is a septic tank soakaway? The soakaway is the most important part of the septic tank system. Poo, wee and fat grease and sludge enter the septic tank and stay in it. Over time the fat grease and sludge builds up inside the septic tank. The excess effluent (which is called sewage or wastewater) makes its way into the soakaway, and from there naturally soakaways away into the soil. If the soakaway becomes blocked up with fat grease and sludge it will stop working. Then the liquid will not be able to soakaway away anymore. Once the soakaway is blocked it cannot be repaired unless you either use soakaway worms or you install a new soakaway.
